From my standpoint, having produced many an estimate in my days,it's a
complicated subject which is taught in business school, and learned
through practical application. Estimating requires building of a model of
the industry or the company, using history as a starting point to
determine relationships and variables which drive an industry or a
company, and factoring in knowledge you have about the future as it will
impact the industry or company in order to develop a forecast or estimate.
If you have no unique knowlwdge about the future (ie. new products, new
markets, acquisitions, regulatory changes, technological changes, etc.)you
can develop a forecast based purely on extrapolating past trends.I suggest
you get hold of a good managerial accounting textbook or scour the web for
articles on the subject. Software is available to help you build models,
but you must have a fundamental understanding of financial statements and
the key drivers involved in the growth in an industry or specific company.Bob
